Unemployment after disability is covered if you are laid off

I have been employed at my job for 11 years. Diagnosed with RA, and Osteo in Nov 2011 and later in Sept 2012 with carpal tunnel, I have endured many bad days at work and is forced to take off due to RA flares. My boss has suggested on several occasions that I apply for SSI/Disability. Recently he has commented on my inability to perform job duties. If I am laid off because of these conditions, am I eligible for unemployment, SSI or disability? I cannot afford to not have a source of income which is why I keep working with high levels of pain. To qualify for SS Disability benefits, you must be certified as being unable to perform "any substantial gainful activity." That's a difficult definition for many people to meet. RA is one of those "twilight zone" conditions that might or might not qualify you.

To be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must be able to work and actively seeking work. Anything less, and you don't qualify for unemployment.

I was laid off while on maternity leave and am able to collect ui. It does take a while for edd to get back to u and they will have u do a phone interview. the interviewer may ask u to fax them your layoff notice and your return to work letter from your doctor. I hope that info helps.
I have a question though i have not recvd my first ui check but I was wondering if I will have another 7 day waiting period like I did with sdi?

If "U" are on maternity leave, you are disabled, not unemployed. You will not qualify for unemployment insurance benefits until you are released to return to work. There is a seven-day elimination period for UI, but you have already satisfied that requirement. In the meantime, unless (or until) exhausted, you may collect SDI benefits for the duration of your pregnancy until released to return to work.

I am a self employed beautician in california. I got hurt outside of work. So, I am the sole employee, employer etc..... I need to have knee surgery. Can I make a SDI claim? if so, how? Please help!

Unless you have paid into SDI -- not likely as a self-employed person -- you are not eligible for SDI payments.

You can attempt to collect by filing an application for SDI benefits with the Employee Development Department. They will, most likely, deny your claim on the basis that you have no "subject wages" in the reporting period that would have established you base wage and benefit.

Whether you live in Virginia or Guam, to be disabled means you are unable to work to some extent or at all. To be unemployed and collect UI benefits means you are able to work and actively seeking work.

So which of those two definitions applies to your situation? In most cases, you cannot be both. Social Security will give you a "trial work" period to see if you can or cannot work with a disability, and how much you can earn. But even that makes you ineligible to receive UI benefits.

You're more than likely to get trial work from social security and that is meant to judge how efficient or capable you're at work.
