All licenses in the insurance industry are issued under the authority of the state, however, the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (18 USC 1033, 1034) specifies that persons who have committed certain felonies are prohibited from being involved without a consent waiver from the state regulator. If your felony specifically involved a money or property crime, among others, you will need the waiver. There is no statute of limitations on when the crime/conviction occurred.

Your conviction must be disclosed in your application for licensing. It is not exactly in the list of felonies that federal law proscribes, but it is in the list of crimes that go to the heart of dealing with the public trust. Your conviction was more than 10 years ago, so if you've got a spotless history since then, you will probably not be denied a license.

I was sentenced to prison for 10 months back in 1997 for 10 months for mail fraud can that stop me from getting an adjusters license in the state of TX or any where else need to know before i take the class

It can prevent you from being licensed. But you won't know until you apply for your license.

How long ago was your conviction? If less than 5-7 years, probably not.

I am contemplating becoming an insurance agent in New Jersey, am 50 years old and have a long history of possession of Marijuana that is over 20 years old with no incidents since then (Young and stupid is all I can say)...will that stop me from obtaining a license?

You don't have a "long" history, you have an "old" history. It should not be an issue, but the conviction must still be disclosed. Failure to disclose is worse than the disclosure.

My husband wants to get licensed to be an insurance adjuster for roofing and construction. He got felony 7 years ago for some type of burglary/violating his probation. Again, this was 7 years ago. He hasn't made up his mind if he would work for an insurance company- but has a friend who will pay for his classes and licensing and wants my husband to work for him-as in self employment. Will my husband be able to get his license?
