non-certification skilled nursing

A friend of mine who is 83 years old has a $6,000 bill with a nursing home she was in in February of this year. For whatever reason, the nursing home did not find an assisted living facility for almost a month after her insurance rejected further skilled nursing. She does not have Medicare. Her family was unable to care for her, and she had no where else to go. She has some money in savings needed to help pay for assisted living, and applying for medicare is not necessary right now. Her family feels she should not have to pay this $6,000 bill. I would appreciate advice.

Hi Sherry..

I do empathize with her situation, but the fact that her carrier rejected any support towards skilled-nursing suggests that she was in no need of skilled nursing at that point of time.

We don't have any proper explanation of why the bills went so high!
May be she had to go through other treatments while she was under the care of a skilled nurse.
Anyway, which state does she belong to? Steeljaws69

She lives in PA. Her insurance carrier (Anthem Blue Cross) is from CA. She was at the nursing home for 30 days at $210 per day. Her insurance paid for her physical therapy. She was there for that length of time without payment as the lady who was taking care of her had a heart attack, and I believe they (nursing home and docytor) assumed the nursing home lady could go back and live with the woman who had the heart attack. These charges accumulated for over two weeks before the lady with the heart attack was notified and said she could not do it anymore.
