I’m not employed any more. Is there a possibility that I may still have health insurance coverage for my family?

Did you consider special enrollment? It could be a cheaper way of retaining your health coverage.

Make sure that you request a special enrollment within 30 days of your coverage lapse. You may check your special enrollment rights within your policy materials that you received while signing up.

Continuation under COBRA is available if you elect it within 60 days of a "qualifying event." Beyond 60 days, it would be by the good graces of your former employer to allow you to continue the plan.

If you and your family are healthy, you may discover that an HMO or PPO plan will be less costly than your employer's group plan under COBRA (where you will be paying 100% of the cost). The individual health plan benefits will probably be significantly less than the group plan offered.

A thing that I'd like to add is- in a group health plan (under HIPAA), the carrier is only allowed to search for pre-existing health conditions for the last 6 months prior to the commencement of the coverage. Pre-existing conditions are not covered for such a small period of time, but you'd be eligible for other benefits that come under the plan.

Don't forget that you'll also have an exclusion period for pre-existing conditions with your new policy. If you're not covered for 63 days while switching jobs, then you may lose the chance to offset your exclusion period.
