a standard renters policy covers your contents and provides liabilty...and usually provides limited coverage for contents away from home, you'll need to check the product you are buying, but they are pretty simple, and very affordable. make sure you AND your boyfriend are listed on the policy to cover both. be sure to get a policy that provides replacement value on your contents, not ACV.

And if the HO-4 policy does not provide the kind of coverage for special items you may have, or certain items away from the premises, then you may also want to consider a "personal articles floater" for the additional coverage. An experienced local agent will be able to assist you.

those personal floaters are great...have one on my wifes ring. i think its an extra $25-30 a year, covers replacement value.

And here in California, it would even cover the ring if squashed by falling debris in an earthquake, while the HO-4 will not. Personal article floaters are known as "all-risk" coverage. Only the named excluded perils will not be covered -- usually things like "mysterious disappearance".
