Any feedback on Southern County Mutual Insurance?

My husband and I have The Hartford auto/home insurance through AARP and he noticed that the fine print says that it is actually through Southern County Mutual. He wants us to switch to another company because county mutuals are more expensive and are for people with bad records. Neither of us have any accidents or tickets and, having been the one who shopped for the insurance, I think we pay a great rate.

Are county mutuals expensive? And only for bad drivers?

Yes, some insurance companies use County Mutuals as a way to adequately price for “higher risk” drivers, also known as non-standard risks. But that is not the only reason they use them.

The best way to tell if you are getting charged “high risk” rates is by shopping your auto insurance. If you find your rate competitive, even though Hartford choose to write it through a County Mutual, then you might want to think about leaving it where it is.

If you do shop your insurance, be sure to ask the agent you are getting a quote from whether or not they are writing it on County Mutual paper.

Please reread the OP's first post, where she wrote that she knows she has a competitive rate. It's her husband who's pitching a fit about being insured by a "County Mutual".
