If the military messed up paperwork so that my father was un

My father was in 30+ yrs and paid for his insurance. He retired but in the system it still showed as active. They have his date of leaving service one that could not possibly be. Now they're saying that he had terminated his insurance a year before leaving the military but this can't be because he was living with me in another state he would have been considered AWOL. He retired at the same time he canceled his SGLI and wasn't able to get VGLI due to it. What can I do??

I don't understand why you'd really care about VGLI unless he's in really poor health. Individually underwritten life insurance is usually much cheaper, and lots of times even guaranteed issue or simplified issue policies can be found for cheaper.

It didn't post right. He wasn't able to switch to VGLI because of the glitch and passed away while they were correcting the problem. He found out he had stage 4 cancer and passed away only 3 months after finding out.

What exactly was the "glitch"? The date of separation from the service? If he was still "in the military" as active duty, he would have been paid his monthly salary. If that's true, his SGLI premium would have been deducted each month. When he was officially "separated" he would have had 120 days to convert to VGLI. If he died within those 120 days, his death benefit would be payable under SGLI, not VGLI.

So I'm not entirely sure what the situation or timing of events actually is, other than your father has died, and I offer my condolences.

Thank you. What happened was he signed that he no longer wanted SGLI because he was leaving the military and was going to sign for VGLI but when he went to do this they told him he was still active military...leaving him with no insurance. It was odd because they paid him a large sum of money I believe for his retirement durring the time when they said he was still active. I also recieved a bill for SGLI right after his death but when I called one person said he had it while another said he didnt. It's really confusing I know but I honestly think the paperwork being messed up caused all these problems he had. He didn't even know what doctor to go to when he started having problems because the systems were showing active and retired at the same tiem.

It would be really good to know who "they" was. If "they" told your father it was not time to enroll in VGLI because he was still active, why would "they" allow him to terminate his SGLI? That's the question the lawyer you'll probably need to get involved with would ask them at the civil trial.

Servicemenbers do not always understand the process, and do things wrong on their own. But if they do something wrong based on someone else's negligent advice, then any person who has been "damaged" by that negligent person's act can seek restitution for their damages from the negligent person.
