I would also like to add following steps, which are also beneficial for you in finding the cheap insurance-:

1.Look at the full cost of the car insurance policy
2.Keep your insurance policy up-to-date
3.Use a price comparison site to compare car insurance from all the leading car insurance companies.
4.Make yourself as lower risk as possible
5.Reduce your car insurance premiums
6.Apply for cover from your existing car insurance provider at renewal as a new customer
7.Make a note in your diary to shop around for a car insurance renewal quote early
8.Check for special car insurance offers

A couple of questions. I was wondering WHY and HOW this would apply in the real world:

6.Apply for cover from your existing car insurance provider at renewal as a new customer

and this...

8.Check for special car insurance offers

Why would anyone apply to the same company as a "new" customer at their renewal? This makes no sense whatsoever. You're re-rated as a "new" consumer and would absolutely lose any renewal discounts that may have been offered at RENEWAL. Can you explain your rationale behind that statement?

Please explain what you mean by "special car insurance offers." There's no such thing. The rate is the rate is the rate is the rate. No state allows "sales" or "special discounts" over and above the standard stuff, like "good driver," or "protective device" or "renewal discount" or "multi-car and multi-policy discounts."

The most important factor which one should follow in order to reduce the car insurance premium is to not get speeding tickets and drive carefully so that one doesn't have to file a claim. This will prevent the insurance premiums from getting raised when the policy is up for renewal.

One can also buy multiple insurance policies from the same insurer and get discounts for loyalty.

Besides auto insurance rates also depend upon the type of car you use. If you own a simple and safe car, your auto insurance rates will be lower. The more flashy and expensive your vehicle, the more will be your auto insurance rates.

Women drivers are considered less of a risk by the insurers. Thus, they might get lower rates on their auto insurance. The same thing happens with teachers. Insurers think them to be responsible citizens, and thus grant them discounts. Teen drivers are considered more of a risk, and thus auto insurance policies for them are expensive.

Yes, buying multiple insurance policies from the same insurance company do help in lowering down the cost of insurance policies. However, before buying multiple policies from one insurer, make sure you check the company's financial strength rating to make sure that you'll get the required compensation when in need.

The business about "buying multiple policies" is somewhat inaccurate. At best, buying auto and homeowner's insurance from the same company will obtain up to a 10% discount (which could, however, amount to a few hundred dollars in savings).

One does not buy "multiple" auto policies, one insures multiple vehicles under one policy to earn a discount.

Buying life (or health) and auto insurance from the same company does not usually result in any discount. Buying business insurance and personal lines from the same company does not generally earn a discount.

make sure you check the company's financial strength rating to make sure that you'll get the required compensation when in need.

The FSR of an insurance company guarantees absolutely NOTHING. It's merely a third-party's estimate of the claims-paying ability of the insurance company. They have been known to be wrong.

While the FSR is not unimportant, an agent who places too much emphasis on an insurer's FSR may be misleading the client. That would not be a good thing.
