An insurance policy that provides the coverage for a number of people under one contract. Group insurance is generally applicable for the health services where the employees and sometimes their dependents are also covered through this policy. Because of the broader coverage, Group policies (life, health) are available at a cheaper rate as compared to the individual policies.

Hi Shebrezee
With Group Insurance the employer (sponsor of group plan) gets a master copy of the policy. The insureds usually just get a card and booklet explaining coverages. Some group plans do provide a certificate.

I can't think of any obligations on the part of the insureds unless they are paying part of the premium. They do have an obligation to understand the policy and whats covered, not covered and how to claim

Is that what you were looking for?

Group insurance is generally provided by an employer or government agency - if you have questions about whther you have cover in place or who it is with you'd be best to discuss it with your employer.

Since the htealh reform act, insurance companies have pretty much stopped selling maternity coverage. When you CAN buy it, it's about $300 a month extra, and most of the time you have to purchase it a full year becoming pregnant, for it to cover. So yes, it's normal for maternity to NOT be covered, under an individual policy. You're not going to get the same kind of coverage that you would through an employer. On an individual policy, they can exclude coverage for stuff already wrong. If you ARE currently pregnant, you're uninsurable on an individual plan until after the baby is born (just sayin', because 95% of the women who mention interest in maternity coverage here, are ALREADY pregnant). For good advice that's valid in YOUR area, you should talk to a local agent near you. They'll know what state you are in, and which deals are best and they can help you balance coverage and cost to find what you can afford, and they'll EXPLAIN how it all works. You won't get that from an online website.

CA insurance code now requires maternity coverage in all group and individual policies, and insurance companies cannot charge different rates for men and women. Cost of individual health insurance has increased for both men and women as a result, but not by $300 per month.

Other states have modified their insurance codes in the same way.
