I've heard that under the economic stimulus plan we could be enjoying a premium reduction for Cobra. Has it really come to effect?

The subsidy for COBRA premiums has been active for months...literally. It pays 65% of your COBRA premium and looks like it's going to be extended for another 6-9 months after the current subsidy expires in December of this year.

Here's a link for info:

If you've lost your job during the period 09/01/08 - 12/31/09, then only the premium reduction would be applicable to you. Those who'd meet the eligibility for Cobra would need to bear 35% of the entire premium while the rest would be met by their ex-employer.

Here's a link that discusses a possible extension of the current COBRA subsidy program:

Looks as if they're going to extend the subsidy and allow additional people into the program. It's gonna likely pass due to high unemployment.

not really on topic I know, but COBRA has to be about the coolest sounding insurance program out there.

If a person who's eligible for Cobra benefits gets disabled then the cobra law would allow his coverage to be continued. The disabled person would need to contact the Social security administration within 60 days once his cobra coverage commences. The individual would also need to hand in a copy of the social security ruling letter to the policy coverage administrators.

InsuranceMedics, welcome to the forum. My last post was referring to the fact that Congress is considering extending the subsidy program and allowing new persons entry into the program after it's ending date of the end of this year.
