Group Health, a good place to start or not?

I would like some advice about the success rate for new agents selling group health. Based on my research it seams that if you are going to sell individual health, make 100 calls only to land 3 policies; you may as well sell group health make 100 calls and land several hundred. I'm not sure if these numbers are realistic to the actual market so feel to shoot me strait. What I am interested in is weather I can feel confident to look for an agency in my area, Southern Indiana population 250,000, that will provide me adequate training to compete with everyone else out there and still survive the first year. I have no BTB sales expierence; however, I am confident in my skillset. My career goals are to learn the business and become independent so for now i'm looking for the best jumping off point. Please offer your advice as to what product would be the best to learn with my end goals in mind!

Thank You
Jamie D

While choosing a group health plan, companies look to achieve two goals,
that'll save money for them and that'll offer good health packages to the employees. Therefore, you need to attain a balance between these two objectives.

Lack of good health plan at the workplace is one of the major reasons for job switches. Hence, companies look for health packages that'll cover the basic health related need of their employees. As a group health insurance agent, your responsibility will be to offer them the product that'll address their needs. And ans an aspiring health insurance agent you should look for an insurer, who is good at backing the promises made to the customers. Otherwise, you'll lose in terms of your credibility.

Hope the input helps. :)

my dear, do you think its gonnabe easier to access those employees at the first go? I've known agent who have tried even the small vendors associated with giants, even they seem reluctant to get them access to their employees' databases. You need to clear the first gateway ( ie, the health control spokesperson or manager)...n they don't seem to have the time to listen to your courteous voice for a moment :)
nyways, wish you all the luck!

Do a bit of research on the companies that offer group health insurance in your area? You may wish to join an organisation that offers good training programs as well as have a good commission structure. Networking is the secret to succeed in insurance business. Therefore, you may also consider associating yourself with professional organisations that may help you in building relationships with the prospects. Wising you luck!

Thank you all for your replies. I feel as if I have been a bit vague. I am attracted to the group health industry over individual health for various reasons, but my primary concern is wether it is a good place to start. I want to avoid jumping into this branch of the insurance industry if success is contengient on a long term presence. It's possible that a better jumping off point is individual health where I can sell some policies, make some $$$ ching and slowly move into group health. This is my concern, I have no expierence and I don't want to make a poor career choice this early in the game.
