You might be covered by your state's disability insurance benefits program, if you don't have disability insurance of your own or through your employer. Many states provide disability insurance benefits programs. Examples are California, New Jersey, New York, Hawaii, and Rhode Island.

this depends on whether your employer paid into the insurance. Certain employers dont and thus the person is not eligible to collect from the states fund. Not covered workers include government employees, farm workers, etc. Of course you would have to check with your state to see if you are covered because this all depends on your state.

Hi Chad, I'm little confuse here. I used to think its the employees who pay for the SDI through their payroll taxes and therefore are eligible to collect state disability benefits upon requirements. Hope you would clear my confusion. :)

Right you the employee pay the tax through your employer in the form of payroll deductions. Some employers dont take that payroll tax out of employees pay, thus making the employee ineligible to get state disability payments because they did not pay into the fund. Government employees are among the groups that dont have the money taken out of their pay and thus can not collect state disability benefits, at least this is how it works in NY, so this may depend on your state.

So, it depends upon the employer to contribute in the state disability fund. They may also choose not to contribute in it. If so, then what recourse the employee has in this context? Is the employer required to inform the employee that its not contributing towards the SDI?

certain employers are not required to. The money is the employees, but the employer deducts it from the employees check and sends it to the state fund. I as a federal government employee dont have state DI taken out of my check because the federal government doesnt do that, thus I am not eligible to collect from the state disability insurance fund (at least that is how it works where I my state NY).

Hey Chad, then how a Fed employees would go about it? Do they receive support from any other fund?
Also, does it have anything to do anything with the size of the company? I guess the part time workers aren't likely to get the benefits from the state fund. Am I right?

If an employee paid into sdi for years previous but now working for government and sdi not deducted from their checks. Can they collect SDI if they need surgery to be off work.

Unlikely. SDI requires that you have "eligible" wages in the 12 months ending with the quarter prior to your disability. If you have not paid into SDI for more than 12-18 months, you will not be eligible. Employers such as this usually have separate benefits to cover such events.
