I am 7 months pregnant and was laid off, I do qualify for unemployment.
Should I stay on unemployment until I am ready to go back to work or should I (and would I qualify) file for disability and paid family medical leave once the baby is here?
Can I just stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

I'm not sure if the HR can actually say so….the employer can't exercise discrimination against the pregnant employee and is required to treat them equally. Do you have maternity leave in your workplace? The FMLA allows all pregnant female employees 12 weeks of maternity leave.
Anyway, there are several government aided programs that helps the mother who can't work during the child bearing phase to receive compensation for doctor's bills, hospitalization bills and other associated expenses. You may check these out too.

Unemployment benefit is another option that might help the expecting mothers if they lose their jobs during pregnancy. Therefore, if you have got fired by the employer you may qualify for the unemployment benefits, however, voluntary unemployment make you automatically ineligible for the benefits.
What exactly the reason stated by the insurance company to deny the claim? This might help us to understand the situation better. If you have been denied wrongfully you might have to seek legal help for your rights.

I can see unemployment benefits since the employer doesn 't have work for the poster. I do not see any disability benefits though. Usually to recieve disability it has to be acondition that is long term and the person can not work. Sorry but that is how it goes. I would definatley look into the unemployment benefits as soon as possible.

Hi preggo, I'm not sure if you can avail private disability policy at this point of time. The insurer may consider your present health condition as pre-existing condition, and therefore, will not cover the current pregnancy.
However, I'll check if you qualify for the social disability benefits. Meanwhile, you too can check out with the government aided programs that help the expecting mothers to meet the medical bills, hospitalization costs and other associated expenses.

Jeorge, I am almost 100% sure there would be no chance for disabilty benefits on this one. You can go read the guidlelines ( I read PA's) and usually it takes being disabled for a year to even get benefits. by this time she would have had the baby and be able to return to work. I agree wiht you about the pre- exsisting condition. Hopefully maybe the poster can recieve other benefits but I don't think it will be through SS...If it would be I would be happy for her.

I agree with JEORGE. 'They' WOULD call it 'pre-existing'. However......(..another comment I agree on..) in every state, there ARE ALOT of programs to help with pregnancies. Maybe the first place you can go to, and ask for information, is your local hospital. Usually..they have programs for 'low income' and 'non-insured' soon-to-become mothers...kind of thing.

It will depend how much money you have on wage record, we always tell people to apply and let the UC office make the determination. What state are you from? Did you work last year? Pennsylvania goes back four quarters of the year to determine eligibility and weekly benefit rates, you will need to go to your states page and put in keyword "unemployment" and see what the rules are for your particular state.

Gn, I have a sister that had a really rough pregnancy a few years back...severe rash and tachicardia..you name it. She tried to file for benefits and was turned down. Here I am taliking about the Unemployment benefits. If they were fired it would be another story. I can not imagine SS benefits for this but know you are very knowledgable in this area. Would they apply?

I've been with my company for 6 years and they gave me home office over a year ago and I was making over $700 weekly. My hours were cut from 40 hrs to 12.5 hrs and I asked them to send me a letter as to why they were cutting my hours, and they did. The letter stated "Due to a slowing economy my hours are being cut." I can't afford to live but I still work for them. I cant find work because I'm high-risk due to my age and thyroid condition. I have no medical insurance and I've applied for medicaid. What should I do? Please help! Should I tell my employer that I'm pregnant.
