Can I afford to stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

I am 7 months pregnant and was laid off, I do qualify for unemployment.

Should I stay on unemployment until I am ready to go back to work or should I (and would I qualify) file for disability and paid family medical leave once the baby is here?

Can I just stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

To be eligible for UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE, you are required to be both capable of working and actively looking for work. If you are not intending to work as a pregnant person, then you cannot obtain UI benefits. Also, a voluntary quit may disqualify you from receiving benefits.

I think you can seek the coverage under a private short-term disability policy, if you have one that is.
I guess, you may also get unemployment benefits, if you are working part time and are out of work because of your pregnancy. However, unemployment is usually not related to pregnancy.

I am almost 5 months pregnant and have placenta previa, which is basically where the placenta begins to tear from the uteran wall. I incurred mass vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, due to this. Would that be considered a potential disability to claim ssi?

NO. While this may be a disabling event, it is a short term one, and will not qualify you for a long term benefit program.
