Can I afford to stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

I am 7 months pregnant and was laid off, I do qualify for unemployment.

Should I stay on unemployment until I am ready to go back to work or should I (and would I qualify) file for disability and paid family medical leave once the baby is here?

Can I just stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

Yes I agree. Social security is one of the longest processes there is. It can be years before even getting an approval. I do not feel even high risk preganacies would qualify for social security. I had a sister who had a very high risk pregnancy with alot of complications about mid way through. She looked into different sources to help with her income and was turned away by almost all. One good side of it all is the preganancy does not last long and the person could be readyt for work soon after birth. You are also correct about the numbers being large if social security made this available. Most pregnancies are not a walk in the park so the Social security waiting lines would be extra long.

Oh god, I could imagine how many of our clients would be "disabled", LOL, we make it a point to tell them that pregnancy is not a disability. We deal with a lot of folks on public assistance.

Thats exactly where I think the best place for help would be. The STates Welfare Dept. could issue medical, cash assistance and food benefits for a disabled pregnant women. It would give some help immediately to the short term problem.

if i have to go out of work before the baby is born due to complications in the pregnancy- do i have to count that towards the 12 weeks after the baby is botn?

hi, i m pregnat with my second child, for my first child i was workin in same company n i had some pregnacy difficultys but that time on my doctor note my company gave me sitting work. this time i have same problems i m not able to carry more than 20lbs n i m not able to stand 8hrs. but this time my H.R said "any kind of restriction cannot work so they told me i have to stay 9 month on disabilty , if i stay on disablity can my health insource will work?

There is a limited protection for health insurance under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). But you are only entitled to a maximum of 12 workweeks of "job-protected" unpaid leave under FMLA.

After that, you would have to continue under the provisions of COBRA.
