I am 7 months pregnant and was laid off, I do qualify for unemployment.
Should I stay on unemployment until I am ready to go back to work or should I (and would I qualify) file for disability and paid family medical leave once the baby is here?
Can I just stay on unemployment during pregnancy?

In Pa as long as you are able and available for work, even if it is light duty, you should be able to file. I know those are the two main issues, ABLE and AVAILABLE, so as far as I can see, you are both, if you are from Pa you should have no problem recieving your unemployment compensation.

Hi goodnatured!
Would you care to explain whether Prego would be eligible for a wholesome unemployment compensation..or is it gonnabe somewhat restricted in this case!

As long as they are able and available for work, it does not specify what type of work. So if there is light duty available or some other type of work that is not as strenuous. We always say that pregnant never meant disabled. So yeah, I would think that a pregnant would be as eligible as any, as long as the doctor says that everything is okay and can work. Again it does not specify what type of work.

The best thing for the poster to do is go to their local unemployment office and speak with them in person. They would get the best information for availabke benefits or whether they will qualify there. You can also find a number and call the unemployemnt office in your local telephone book.

In Pennsylvania you can not walk into an unemployment center the way you used to, know it is a call center. Sometimes the line is busy up to 5 days in a row, you have to just keep calling and trying. We have many frustrated people come into the office and their is very little we can do for them except listen, they get so frustrated.

I would just stay on the unemployment, even if your Dr. says that you are qualified by his word, does not mean that you would not go through a long and aggravated process just to get SSI, not even disability. I waited for three years to be approved for Disability, even went to court and still was denied. then I appealed and re-applied, finally was approved. I personally, would just stick to medical leave and unemployment, just my 2 cents.
Chula

I hear you chula and the medical leave is the proper thing to do, the employer has these benefits in place for that very reason.
The whole social security system is an awful system to deal with, people that you would not think would get it qualify and get their approval right away, where others who are truley deserving and have worked their whole lives fight their rear ends off to get benefits.
I don't deal with the social security system, I deal with the veterans administration.

Chule why did they deny you so many times, even i n court, and then all the sudden qualify you? It seems like three years was an awful long time.

You can often get a paid pregnancy disability leave for work. That's considered a benefit though. If your job has no benefits, I'm not sure if they will do this for you. I suppose you'd just have to ask them what their policy is. Hope this helps! God bless you! Take care.

I don't think for social security purposes that pregnancy is considered a disability. I know that for disability you have to have a condition that makes you totally disabled and unable to work, I would not think that pregnancy would fall into this definition. I can not imagine the social security administration taking on this responsibilty. I can not imagine the vast number that would apply. And hell by the time they would approve it, your kid would be walking at the least. It is a long process.
